Tama: A Puritan's Delight

Restaurant and Bar Design Inspired by Copper

Tama, a restaurant and bar located in Faridabad, India, takes inspiration from the historical significance of copper and its connection to human civilization. Designed by Devesh Pratyay, Tama aims to recreate the value and energy associated with this metal, offering guests a unique and immersive experience.

Tama stands out as a puritan's delight, with its design drawing from the essential qualities of copper. Every element in the space is crafted in its purest form, reflecting the superconductor properties of the metal that remove impurities. The name "Tama" itself is derived from the Bengali word for copper, further emphasizing the design's connection to this material.

The energy of Tama is derived from the rich music and dance traditions of Indian culture. The space is designed to manifest positive human energy through art forms, with dance and music being integral parts of the experience. From the moment guests enter the restaurant, they are enveloped in an atmosphere that feels special and inviting.

The realization of Tama's design involved a combination of materials and techniques. Sculptures and coins were created using fiberglass and painted in an antique copper color, while the flooring features Italian marble, titanium travertine, and silver potrero. Mirrors are strategically placed to reflect and enlarge the space, while wooden battens add warmth to the main hall area and private dining rooms. The ceiling incorporates mirrors and veneer with acoustic foam, and the walls are painted with Oikos texture paints from Italy.

Tama occupies a 700 square meter space, spread across a single level, with a seating capacity of 220 covers. The design is carefully divided into different sections, offering guests privacy and catering to different tastes. The main restaurant area includes corridor seating, balcony seating, a central stage area, and window seating. Two private dining areas feature plush sofa seats, while the toilets are designed with infinity mirrors and male and female busts to distinguish between the two.

The project began in May 2017 and was completed in February 2018. Tama is located in the sector 16 market of Faridabad, Haryana, India. The design required extensive research to identify and incorporate old coins and sculptures, adding a touch of history and authenticity to the space.

Tama's unique design and attention to detail have been recognized with the prestigious A' Design Award. In 2018, it received the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This award acknowledges designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
